Key takeaway: Confused.com customers paid a median of £707 for van insurance in April–June 2026, and Defaqto says prices in August 2026 were 11% lower than a year earlier. What you pay depends heavily on your class of use, age, postcode and no-claims history. Comprehensive cover was cheaper on average than third party only in Confused.com’s data, so don’t assume the lowest level of cover gives the lowest price.
How we research this page: We don’t sell insurance, give advice or set prices. This page summarises published data from Confused.com, Compare the Market, Consumer Intelligence, Defaqto, MoneySuperMarket, Quotezone, Admiral, Howden, Zego, Direct Line and GOV.UK, checked October 2026. How much is van insurance in the UK?

There is no single “average van insurance cost”. Some publishers report what customers paid, some report what they were quoted, and some track only the cheapest quotes. That is why the figures below look so different.

SourceAnnual figureWhat it measures
Confused.com£707Median paid by its customers, April–June 2026
Compare the MarketUnder £622.84What 51% of its customers were quoted (September 2026 page)
Defaqto£603Typical premium, August 2026 (down from £723 in August 2025)
Consumer Intelligence£1,767 average; £1,067 medianAll quotes, May 2026

The direction of travel also depends on the measure. Defaqto’s price index, which tracks the five most competitive quotes, fell 4.5% between June and August 2026 and was 16% lower than in April 2025. Nine of the ten main van insurers it tracks cut prices. Consumer Intelligence, which looks at all quotes, found average quoted premiums rose 2.4% in the year to May 2026, with the sharpest quarterly rise (8.1%) for vans up to two years old.

Van insurance cost by age

Age is one of the biggest factors. Consumer Intelligence’s May 2026 quotes averaged £3,529 for drivers under 25, £1,643 for 25–49s and £1,113 for over-50s. Compare the Market says 51% of its under-25 van drivers were quoted less than £1,594.62 a year. Defaqto found under-26s saw the biggest annual price fall to August 2026, at 13%.

Levels of cover: third party, TPFT and comprehensive

GOV.UK says third party insurance is the legal minimum. It covers you if you cause damage or injury to another person, vehicle, animal or property. The two higher levels add protection for your own van.

Cover levelWhat it addsMedian paid (Confused.com, Apr–Jun 2026)
Third party onlyInjury and damage to others only. Nothing for your van.£1,599
Third party, fire & theftYour van if it is stolen or damaged by fire. Not accident damage to your van.£1,120
ComprehensiveDamage to your own van as well.£693

Because of this, it is worth pricing comprehensive cover too when you compare van insurance quotes.

Classes of use: which one do you need?

Your class of use tells the insurer what the van is for. Getting it wrong is one of the easiest ways to end up with an invalid policy. Confused.com warns that the wrong class can mean a refused claim or a cancelled policy, and a cancellation has to be declared to future insurers, which can push up your premiums.

Class of useWhat it coversMedian paid (Confused.com, Apr–Jun 2026)
Social, domestic & pleasure (SD&P)Personal use only: shopping, school runs, hobbies, holidays. No commuting or business.£577
SD&P plus commutingAdds travel to and from one permanent place of work, not several sites.£682
Carriage of own goods (business use)Carrying your own tools and equipment for your job, including visits to different sites. Common for builders, plumbers, cleaners and mobile dog groomers.£681
Haulage / hire and reward (including courier)Carrying other people’s goods for money. Courier work means many drops; haulage means longer trips with fewer drops. Admiral includes parcel and takeaway delivery here.£2,324

Business van insurance usually means carriage of own goods. Courier van insurance sits in the hire-and-reward class, which is why it costs far more. If you deliver parcels, check your class of use covers it: Confused.com warns that the wrong class can mean a refused claim.

What affects the price of van insurance?

Can you use your car no-claims bonus on a van?

Sometimes. MoneySuperMarket says you may be able to transfer your NCB from a car to a van, but this depends on the provider, and you will need proof. Zego says most insurers let you use an NCB on only one active policy at a time, so you usually can’t use the same bonus on your car and your van. Named drivers don’t usually earn their own NCB, though some insurers offer a named-driver discount. MoneySuperMarket also says you are unlikely to be covered to drive a van on your car insurance.

Add-ons and related cover for tradespeople

Tools cover

Quotezone says most standard van insurance does not include tools or van contents. Separate tools cover often excludes theft from a van parked overnight on a public road, or limits cover to set hours such as 7pm to 7am. Insurers typically want signs of forced entry and tools kept out of view, bolted down or in a lockbox. Single-item limits are usually £500 to £1,500.

The risk is real. A Volkswagen survey of 1,000 van owners, reported in October 2025, found 28% had tools stolen in 2024, with an average loss of £2,433 per incident. Direct Line business insurance says 9,522 vans were stolen in the UK in 2025, one every 55 minutes.

Goods in transit

Goods in transit insurance covers the items you carry against theft, loss and damage, including during loading and unloading. Confused.com says it is not a legal requirement, but couriers may need it under their contract. It doesn’t cover the van itself, damage to other people’s property, or goods left in an unlocked van.

Public and employers’ liability

Zego (January 2024) describes public liability as cover if you injure someone or damage their property while working, such as spilling paint on a client’s carpet. Employers’ liability is different: GOV.UK says you must have it as soon as you become an employer, with at least £5 million of cover, or face fines of £2,500 for every day you are not properly insured. Breakdown, legal and courtesy van

Confused.com and Compare the Market list breakdown cover, legal expenses, courtesy van, windscreen and misfuelling cover as common add-ons. If you lose income when your van is off the road, a courtesy van may matter more than it would for a private driver.

Fleet insurance for two or more vans

Quotezone says two vehicles is the most common minimum for fleet insurance, though some insurers want three or five. A fleet policy puts every vehicle on one renewal date and can use any-driver or named-driver cover.

Electric van insurance

MoneyExpert says electric vans often cost more to insure than diesel ones, because they cost more to buy and repair, parts including batteries are expensive, and repairs may need a specialist. Some policies won’t cover a van with a leased battery. We did not find 2025 or 2026 price data comparing electric and diesel van premiums.

How to get cheap van insurance

  1. Compare quotes before you renew. Confused.com says the cheapest time to buy is around 21 days before renewal. MoneySuperMarket’s January–April 2025 data showed savings of up to £89.70 by buying 28 days early.
  2. Pay annually if you can. Compare the Market lists paying annually as one way to cut costs.
  3. Choose the right class of use. Don’t pay for hire and reward if you only carry your own tools, but never under-declare.
  4. Think about who is named on the policy. Howden lists named drivers as a factor in the price.
  5. Improve security and parking. Howden lists Thatcham-approved security, off-road parking and racking as factors.
  6. Consider telematics, a dash cam or a higher voluntary excess. Only raise the excess to a level you could pay.
  7. Keep mileage realistic and value the van accurately.

Consumer Intelligence data from July 2026, quoted by Confused.com, found 51% of van customers could save up to £852.87 by shopping around. If you also own a car, see our car insurance guide, or browse all our insurance guides.

What happens if you drive a van without insurance?

GOV.UK says it is illegal to drive on a road or in a public place without at least third party insurance. Police can give you a £300 fixed penalty and 6 penalty points. If the case goes to court, you could get an unlimited fine and be disqualified. Police can also seize, and in some cases destroy, the vehicle. Separately, Confused.com warns that using the wrong class of use can invalidate your policy.
