What is black box car insurance?
Black box insurance, also called telematics insurance, uses a device or phone app to record how, when and how much you drive. The insurer turns that data into a driving score, which can affect your discount, your renewal price and in some cases whether the policy continues.
It tends to make the most difference for younger drivers, as the savings figures below show. Which? (November 2025) reports that one in five drivers have bought telematics insurance. Its survey also found one in six telematics buyers didn’t realise their driving would be monitored, so it’s worth being clear what you’re agreeing to.
How does black box insurance work?
Confused.com describes three main set-ups:
- Professionally fitted box: an engineer installs a unit in the car. Admiral says its original LittleBox is usually fitted out of sight behind the glovebox. There may be a fee to remove it later.
- Self-installed plug-in device: you plug it in yourself. Admiral’s Plug and Drive version goes into the 12-volt socket.
- App only: your phone records your journeys. Direct Line’s DrivePlus app runs in the background once registered. Some app policies also use a small windscreen tag; Admiral’s Pod is a windscreen-mounted Bluetooth device used with its app. Hastings Direct’s YouDrive page (last updated May 2024) lists wireless tab and app options.
You don’t always get to choose. Admiral says it decides which LittleBox version you get.
Confused.com also identifies two pricing styles. Reward-based policies give you a discount at renewal or at intervals during the year if you drive well. Immediate-saving policies are cheaper upfront, with your driving monitored throughout the year.
What does a black box measure?
Each insurer scores driving differently, but the same themes come up again and again.
| Insurer / product | What it says it scores |
|---|---|
| Admiral LittleBox | Speeding, braking, acceleration, night driving (10pm–4am) |
| Direct Line DrivePlus | Speed relative to traffic, smooth acceleration and braking, time of day, road complexity, phone use while driving |
| Howden guide | Speed, braking, cornering, time of day, mileage |
| Confused.com guide | Speed and acceleration, braking, cornering, mileage, time of day, location |

Do black box policies have a curfew?
Hard curfews are rarer than they used to be. Which? says they are “less likely to feature in policies now”, though some policies still look at when you drive. What insurers say:
- Admiral: “There’s no curfew”, but regular driving between 10pm and 4am lowers your score, and you may not get as big a discount if you always drive at night.
- Howden: most policies lack hard curfews, but driving between around 10pm and 6am can hurt your score.
- Confused.com: you might have a curfew, and late-night driving could count against your score.
If you regularly drive late, for example for shift work, check exactly how night journeys are treated.
How much can you save with black box insurance?
The best 2025/2026 evidence we found is a Which? analysis published in November 2025. It found telematics was the cheapest quote 42% of the time, with an average saving of £228 when it was.
| Driver age | How often telematics was cheapest | Median saving when cheaper |
|---|---|---|
| 17–19 | 82.8% | £2,172 |
| 20–24 | 74.6% | £289 |
| 25–29 | 50.8% | £124 |
| 30–34 | 37.2% | Not given |
| 50+ | Under 25% | Not given |

For 17–19-year-olds, the cheapest telematics quote was about half the cheapest conventional one. For drivers in their thirties and older, a standard policy was more often the cheaper option. For context, Confused.com puts the average comprehensive premium for 17–24-year-olds at £1,556 in July–September 2026, against £713 for all drivers. Our young driver car insurance guide covers costs by age in more detail.
Can black box insurance make your premium go up?
Yes, at renewal, and the worst drivers can lose their cover:
- Admiral: only a minority of drivers with consistently low scores see their premium rise at renewal, and the worst can have their policies cancelled.
- Direct Line: “We won’t increase the cost of your insurance mid-term based on your driving scores”, but your DrivePlus score is considered at renewal.
- Howden: consistent speeding can lower your score and may lead to higher premiums or cancellation.
Extra fees and limits to check
Which? lists possible charges for changing vehicle, missing an installation appointment, disconnecting or removing the box, mid-term changes and early cancellation. Confused.com warns some policies have a mileage cap.
Eligibility rules vary too. Admiral’s LittleBox needs at least 1,000 miles a year, a car worth £250 or more and a car made in the last 15 years. Direct Line’s DrivePlus is for drivers under 26 with a full UK licence.
Black box insurance and your data
Telematics means your insurer holds detailed records of your journeys. Insurers’ published positions include:
- Admiral: it doesn’t tell the police if data suggests you were only speeding, and shares data only if there is a police inquiry or a serious incident. It doesn’t pass your data to rival insurers for pricing.
- Howden: driving data is used for insurance purposes only unless required by law.
- Confused.com: your data won’t be shared except for police criminal investigations.
Under UK data protection law you can ask an organisation for a copy of the personal information it holds about you, known as a subject access request. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) guidance (September 2024) says the response should also explain how your data is used and shared, how long it is kept, and whether any automated decision-making or profiling is involved. If you’re unhappy with how your data is handled, you can complain to the ICO.
App-based policies use mobile data. Direct Line estimates about 60MB a month for 1,000 miles at an average of 40mph.
